I've just spent the last 5 days with a poet. What? Those who know me well are shaking their heads in dismay. But let me explain. You see, the person I'm referring to is Lavender Rose, pen name of a Canadian poet who specializes in a wonderful style of writing that offers insights into romance. In her new book “Varietas”, she gently guides readers through a journey of passionate love, heartbreak and disappointment, through to empowerment and healing. It’s a book for men and women who care about love or are trying to recover from a broken heart. Men who want to better understand the female gender and get inside a woman's heart and mind… and women who want to listen to someone who is very relatable to themselves. “I want to inspire readers to gain more insights into romance,” the poetess says. “Because when your understanding broadens, your love deepens.” Now, to be clear, we're not talking about the “Tiger, tiger, burning bright, in the forests of the night…” type of rhymes that I slept through in school. No, today’s compositions are the kind of “confessional poetry” that is becoming increasingly in demand across the marketplace. Let me share what I've learned. Poetry is growing in popularity. The National Endowment for the Arts reports that poetry reading has increased by 76% across all demographics and is accelerating amongst 18-24 year olds, having more than doubled between 2012 and 2017. Why is this? Lavender Rose has an answer. “I think people are turning to poetry on Instagram because they want to get away from some of the usual material they see with social media,” she says. “People in this age group have never experienced life without a smart phone. They’re living with shorthand. But then, along comes poetry – good poetry – and the reader is encouraged to take their time, relax and think about the written words, which often speak on many levels. I think it's a great break, acting as a slow-down from the hectic pace of life.” Cool, huh? Oh, and why have I spent time with this lady? Well, you see, I mentor writers, usually the kind who pen fiction and non-fiction tomes. But having met this bright poetess – who deserves to find an audience and will do so by developing her personal brand and applying marketing tactics to enhance her awareness – I took her on as a pro bono "client" in order to share whatever marketing strategies I have developed over the years, along with publishing knowledge I've picked up from writing 6 books. It's been a real adventure. Fact is, I don't normally read poetry. But being introduced to the unique style of Lavender Rose and entering into the realm of modern day poetry, I'm pleased to be learning about a new art form. Want to know more?
