Ever hear of The Epoch Times? I hadn’t either until recently. It’s a weekly newspaper that suggests it is “North America's fastest-growing newspaper”. Oh yeah? Purportedly, it provides its readers with “Real News Other Media Outlets Don’t Report”. Really?
Being the news junkie that I am, I was intrigued when a free copy arrived on my doorstep a couple of weeks back. Accompanying the paper was their offer of a low-cost trial subscription for a month. After that, I could bale out or sign on for more. I signed up.
Yesterday, I baled. Early.
Why? Well, it’s pretty simple, really. You see, if you say you stand for “honest journalism”, then you really ought to sustain that claim. But how can I take this rag seriously when they feature Conrad Black talking about Donald Trump? C’mon fellas: Trump pardoned Black! Surely that means Conrad must recuse himself from writing about the man, whether with praise (which he obviously feels) or the opposite extreme. Being uninvolved and unbiased is a tenet of independent, honest, objective journalism, which is what you say you stand for. But that’s not being observed here, which now casts the whole paper into doubt. So I'm outta here.
Now, don’t get me wrong: I read Conrad every weekend in the National Post and enjoy his columns. Don’t much agree with him, but enjoy his views. Still, The Epoch Times can’t seriously expect us lowly peons to think Black doesn’t have a hidden agenda in his support of his benefactor. And so, I shall not continue my subscription to this paper because they fail at that which they claim to excel at: honest journalism.
Oh, and by the way, should anyone from The Epoch Times be reading this, you should be aware that your delivery person throws your paper against my garage door, which is nowhere near the front door to my house. Do they really think I go in an out from my garage? Maybe Trumpsters do, but… oh well, that’s another topic, isn’t it.
